Day 9
This morning, after an eventful weekend the girls were back at St. George’s starting off the day in class 2. Georgie, Emma, and Emily led this class with a short game of ‘Simon Says’, followed by a few rounds of hangman. The class enjoyed this the most! The girls ended the class with some dances outside, we were playing music on the speaker loudly, so the class began singing along with it.
Our next
class of the day was class 3, led by Ruby and Katie. We made fortune tellers
with the girls, explaining how to fold them, colour them, and come up with
creative questions to ask each other. All
the students seemed to really enjoy making them. The fortune tellers could be
seen throughout the day being used in the halls and yard.
Class 6 was
taught by all the girls. As a group, we described and demonstrated how one of
the more complicated Céilí dances that we do at home is done. Once there was
somewhat of a rhythm throughout the room, we brought the class outside to put
our practice into motion. We all had a lot of fun and there were an equal
participation and enthusiasm throughout the group.
There was
no coffee break today as we quickly moved onto Class 4. Izzy O’R and Rachael
led this class with the activity of describing ourselves, this was achieved by
using pictures of stickmen. The students then proceeded to write sentences
around the picture with examples such as I am…
tall/artistic/clever/friendly/kind and I have… a brother/a sister/a dog/black
hair etc. When they were completed, different students volunteered to read
their sheets aloud and shared any new words they learned throughout the lesson.
After a
small break, before running around the yard with the children on their lunch break,
the girls headed to Class 5 which was the last class of the day. Eva and Isabelle
D took the class and played the thoroughly enjoyed game of ‘Stop the Bus’. The
students were given different categories to fill in on a page and then were given
a letter that each word in the categories had to start with, the first to
finish yells “Stop the Bus” and if their answers were correct, they got a
sticker. Before the game started, the girls made mind maps on the board of the
categories that would be used and asked the class to give different example for
each one such as countries, animals, food and jobs. It’s safe to say the
students really enjoyed this lesson and it will be played again. Some of the
students were even playing it after school with Izzy O’R and Ms. Kinsella.
Although we
had lots of classes today, we of course were not going to pass the opportunity to
play our final basketball match. We played against a strong St. George’s team
but with the help of Mr. Hudson we managed to draw the match.
Lunch today
was eaten with the teachers of St. George’s school. The girls spent lunch eating
lovely snacks, sandwiches, and pastries thanks to Brother Gribbin. This was a
great time to see even further into the classroom, talking to the important people
who educate the students we engage with each day. The classroom was full of
chats learning about lives inside and outside of school (Emma even learned
about Francis’ life journey). After food the girls even got a quick peek at the
new kitchen that the previous HCK group of Kolkata 2025 help to make possible
with their fundraising.
We couldn’t
leave St. Georges without another round of basketball followed by chats. Returning
for our reflection and dinner, the girls are ready for another fun filled day
of classes, games and Mehindi (henna) tomorrow morning.

To the 5th Years from 1H:
ReplyDeleteWe think this is a really exciting experience for you and for all the children. Everyone is enjoying the fun games and all kinds of new things like how to make fortune tellers and dances. We loved reading how you met with the older girls, playing basketball, making jewellery they forming good connections with these girls.
We cant wait till we are in 5th Year as we are sure so many people will sign up for this. We wonder what it will be like?
We love reading your posts and finding out what it’s all about! We hope you have a great time!
To Ms Kinsella from your 2nd Year Irish Class
ReplyDeleteTá súil againn go bhfuil tú ag baint sult as san India. Is múinteoir chomh maith thú. Conas atá an India? Tá súil agam go mbainfidh tú taitneamh as. Conas atá an aimsir? Tóg níos mó grianghraf.
Dear India Team, I am so proud of your all reading these blog posts each evening, and indeed with First and Second Years last week who were so impressed with how much you are doing.
ReplyDeleteYou are embracing every opportunity to build connections with your fellow students in St George’s and the Mary Rice Centre, to experience the many rich and colourful diverse aspects of Kolkata and to really immerse yourselves in the life of your host communities. The photos and little videos are an absolute joy to browse through, and bring back many memories for me of crazy busy streets and endless colourful stalls. I loved reading about the flower market, and crossing the river with the views of the Howrah Bridge.
It is so uplifting to read about your experiences in the classroom and see the fun you are enjoying in the yard. I see that your candle continues to burn brightly each evening as you take time to reflect and digest the events of the day.
Praying continued blessings on you all,
Mrs Moiselle.
